Batken, Kyrgyzstan (24 November 2011) – Forty-six chiefs of border and customs control departments at border crossing points located at the Kyrgyz-Tajik border, heads of municipalities and other local authorities from Tajik and Kyrgyz cross-border districts have been trained on conflict prevention and conflict transformation techniques.

Two training sessions were arranged by the EU-UNDP Border Management in Central Asia (BOMCA) Programme together with UNDP Peace and Development Programme at Isfana and Batken.

The trainings were aimed at familiarising participants with conflict analysis and delivering of interactive and participatory activities on conflict prevention. In the course of the trainings, participants have elaborated local action plans for future conflict transformation activities and have designed tools for dissemination of acquired knowledge and skills.

The Ferghana valley is especially prone to trafficking in drugs, people and arms, which is a major destabilising factor mitigating against the rule of law and the development of social capital. The pilot trainings completed today are expected to contribute to cross-border cooperation and understanding between Kyrgyz and Tajik local communities.

The overall objectives of BOMCA are to help increase security in the Central Asian region, to contribute toward the facilitation of legitimate trade and transit, and to reduce the illicit movement of goods and people.

The EU-UNDP BOMCA assistance programme is funded by the European Union and implemented by UNDP.
