Novopokrovka, Kyrgyzstan (17 November 2011) – A two-day Regional workshop for chiefs of training institutions from all five Central Asian countries and Latvia, organised by the EU-UNDP Border Management in Central Asia (BOMCA) programme, started today.
The workshop convened directors and senior instructors of border guard training institutions, dog training centres and officers of state border services. Mr. Andris Āboliņš, Deputy Chief of the Latvian State Border Guard's College and Mr. Uldis Barkāns, Chief of the Dog Handlers' Service of the State Border Guard's College shared with other participants the European experience in training of border guards. The workshop participants will present their national training systems of border staff and will discuss national training curriculums. They will also make proposals for improvement and optimization of training plans and curricula, as well as exchange best practices in training methods. "Сhallenge of borders between Central Asian states not only requires that infrastructure should be replaced or renovated. Parallel to this, professional staff involved in border management have to adopt a more comprehensive and efficient system of border management. In this perspective BOMCA is interested in upgrading the professional capacity of border agencies' staff and related institutions," said Wuria Karadaghy, BOMCA Regional Programme Manager. The overall objectives of BOMCA are to help increase security in the Central Asian region, to contribute toward the facilitation of legitimate trade and transit, and to reduce the illicit movement of goods and people. The EU-UNDP BOMCA assistance programme is funded by the European Union and implemented by UNDP.
