Border guards commanders discuss regional cooperation in Central Asian border security issues

Issyk-Kul, Kyrgyzstan (12 September 2011). – A two-day meeting of Border Guards' Commanders from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan started today.

 

The so-called "Issyk-Kul Initiative", facilitated by the EU-UNDP Border Management Programme in Central Asia (BOMCA) provides senior border guards with a forum for discussion of border management and regional cooperation issues in Central Asia. By their participation in such high-scale meeting, representatives of participating countries' Border agencies articulate their readiness for a dialogue.

Today General-Major Zakir Tilenov, Commander of Kyrgyz Border Troops will sign bilateral joint complex plans of interaction and cooperation with General-Major Nurzhan Myrzaliev, Director of Border Service of Kazakhstan, and with General-Major Sherali Mirzo, Commander of Border Troops of Tajikistan, as well as the Memorandum of Understanding with the State Border Service of Turkmenistan.

Tomorrow participants of the meeting will make presentations on introduction and future implementation of National Integrated Border Management (IBM) strategies in Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan and discuss issues of regional cooperation, joint interest and concern. At the Conference BOMCA will present a concept of the Central Asian Border agencies' training institutions consortium to be created in the nearest future.

The overall objectives of the BOMCA Programme are to help increase security in the Central Asian region, to contribute toward the facilitation of legitimate trade and transit, and to reduce the illicit movement of goods and people.

The BOMCA Programme is funded by the European Union and implemented by UNDP.
