Warsaw (Poland), 28 May 2010 – A study tour for eighteen senior representatives of Central Asian border guard agencies, organised by the EU-UNDP Border Management in Central Asia (BOMCA) assistance programme in partnership with the International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD), ended today.
Central Asian border guards participated in the International Border Police Conference where senior representatives from the European Union (EU) Member States and partner agencies discussed operational cooperation between Member States in the field of border security. They also attended an annual "European Day for Border Guards" established by the European Agency for the Management of Operational Cooperation at the EU External Borders (FRONTEX). The Conference convened representatives from the European Commission, European Parliament, EU presidency and authorities of the Republic of Poland. It aimed at supporting the European community of 400,000 border guards in Europe, providing a forum for discussion and exchange of best practices. In the framework of the EU-UNDP BOMCA assistance programme, the European Union helps foster institutional reform in border management, strengthens training capacities in Central Asia, assists in securing the Tajik-Afghan border and enhances infrastructure capacities along trade and transit corridors in Central Asia. The EU-UNDP BOMCA assistance programme is funded by the European Union and implemented by UNDP with ICMPD as a partner.
