| NATIONAL TRAINING ON DRUG TRAFFICKING FOR DRUG PROFILING UNITS IN TAJIKISTAN |

Khudjant, Tajikistan, 2 June 2010 – The EU-UNDP Border Management in Central Asia (BOMCA) Programme organized a national training on intelligence gathering and risk analysis in the area of drug trafficking.
27 participants of the training, staff of the drug profiling units (DPUs) and members of the national DPUs Interagency Supervisory Board in Tajikistan together with the international expert and BOMCA representatives discussed counter drug smuggling methods, intelligence gathering and special operative techniques. The topics related to the interagency and international cooperation were of high importance for the audience as well. Participants also visited premises and assessed DPUs operation in Nau, Proletarsk railway stations and Khujand airport, discussed the use of daily operational practices and ways of improving interagency cooperation and interaction. Members of the DPUs Interagency Supervisory Board presented their vision on further development of counter drug capacities of agencies working at borders. The 6 DPUs established in four border railway stations and two international airports of Tajikistan aim at promotion of multi-agency cooperation in the area of both operational and analytical activities, and reinforcement of drug control capacities on the spot. BOMCA assists the DPUs' activities in the country through advice on legal regulatory framework, construction of premises for interagency use, provision of drug detection and identification equipment, delivery of drug profiling training to DPUs staff. Within the framework of the EU-UNDP BOMCA assistance programme, the European Union fosters institutional reform in border management, strengthens training capacities, assists in securing the Tajik-Afghan border, improves the infrastructure along trade and transit routes, and helps counter drug smuggling in Central Asia.
