Novopokrovka, 17 January 2011 – Today the EU-UNDP Border Management in Central Asia Programme (BOMCA) handed over to the Government of Kyrgyzstan two constructed and equipped buildings of the dormitory and canteen attached to the Border guards' Training Centre.

A newly constructed dormitory has 44 rooms with bathrooms, air-conditioning, heating and fire alarm systems. A canteen for 48 seats is fully equipped with food processing equipment, a food distribution line, air-conditioning, as well as fire alarm and heating systems. Both facilities are equipped with computers, furniture, sport and household equipment. Total construction budget together with furniture and equipment amounted to over €600,000 Euro.

The building of the Training Centre with a total capacity of 100 trainees was renovated and equipped during 2007-2008 to provide short and long term courses for border staff. A training package includes methods of operation to increase the effectiveness of law enforcement agencies and integrated border management for border guards. Cost of renovation and equipment amounted to €400,000 Euro.

The Centre has a computer and training classrooms, two libraries, sport hall room, as well as the other infrastructure facilities including water pipeline and networks.

For enhancing training capacities of border guards, in all five Central Asian countries the border agencies' training centres were refurbished or constructed and equipped with all necessary equipment. In Kyrgyzstan, two training centres for border guards (in Novopokrovka and Osh) were refurbished and equipped.

Within the framework of the EU-UNDP BOMCA assistance programme, the European Union fosters institutional reform in border management, strengthens training capacities, assists in securing the Tajik-Afghan border, improves the infrastructure along trade and transit routes, and helps counter drug smuggling in Central Asia.

The BOMCA programme is funded by the European Union and implemented by UNDP.
