TASHKENT, Uzbekistan, 25 June 2010 – Over the course of five days, twenty-two representatives of the Uzbek border management agencies (the State Border Guards Committee under the National Security Service, the Military Customs Institute, the Phyto-Sanitary, the Veterinary and the Quarantine Control Services) participated in an Integrated Border Management (IBM) skills training workshop. It was organised with the support of the EU-UNDP BOMCA assistance programme together with the International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD).

Experts from the European Union presented the IBM concept and principles, its practical implementation, and importance of cooperation and coordination of border management activities.

The training's agenda included presentations on the border police and customs procedures in EU Member States. Trainers together with participants reviewed case studies on procedures at airports and land border crossing points. Risk profiling methods and information exchange between border agencies were also discussed at the workshop.

Within the framework of the EU-UNDP BOMCA assistance programme, the European Union fosters institutional reform in border management, strengthens training capacities, assists in securing the Tajik-Afghan border, improves the infrastructure along trade and transit routes, and helps counter drug smuggling in Central Asia.
