TASHKENT, 27 JANUARY 2011 – Today the EU-UNDP BOMCA Programme handed over a vehicle Toyota Land Cruiser to the Border Guards Committee of the National Security Service of Uzbekistan. The handover event was attended by representatives of the Border Guards Committee and BOMCA staff. The car, handed over today, is intended to be used by BOMCA beneficiary representatives in their daily operations. BOMCA works with seven beneficiary entities in Uzbekistan, including five controlling bodies involved in border management: the Border Guards Committee under the National Security Service, the Customs Committee, the Ministry of Interior, the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources. By law, the Uzbek Border Guards Committee is the key state agency responsible for border protection. Within the framework of the EU-UNDP BOMCA assistance programme, the European Union fosters institutional reform in border management, strengthens training capacities, improves the infrastructure along trade and transit routes, and helps counter drug smuggling in Central Asia. The EU-UNDP BOMCA assistance programme is funded by the European Union and implemented by UNDP. |
