Bishkek, 16 February 2011 – Today the EU-UNDP Border Management in Central Asia Programme (BOMCA) handed over equipment to the Department of State Veterinary Control under the Ministry of Agriculture of the Kyrgyz Republic. The equipped training class will serve as a base for capacity building for over 60 veterinary inspectors deployed at 9 border crossing points (BCPs). Inspectors undergo refreshment training sessions at this equipped facility on a bi-monthly basis. Additionally some part of donated equipment will be used at several veterinary posts located at Ak-Jol, Chaldybar, Ak-Tilek, Manas airport, Bishkek railway, Torugart, Irkeshtam, and Dostuk BCPs. The role of the State Veterinary Control Department is to ensure early detection and assessment of new diseases and the other animal-related threats. The cost of equipment is over 28 thousand Euros. Within the framework of the EU-UNDP BOMCA assistance programme, the European Union fosters institutional reform in border management, strengthens training capacities, assists in securing the Tajik-Afghan border, improves the infrastructure along trade and transit routes, and helps counter drug smuggling in Central Asia. The BOMCA programme is funded by the European Union and implemented by UNDP.
